
Now we are talking. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig MuseumPark Project has captured the attention and patronage of a rather impressive list of arts foundations who are backing the concept in Wilson, NC. and this should put some giddy up in the project.

Here is what the "Reflector Box" whirligig reflector blocks look like. There are 72 of these and about 500 pieces of reflectors put on with nails. One bolt holds the block in place and a bracket from old road sign material is wired onto the frame. Vollis used a variety of nails which have split the block as it weathered. Ironically our effort to observe, record, conserve and rebuild and restore each block back to the original exceeded the approach Vollis used when he put them on but Vollis making all of the components and the whirligig was still a big undertaking.
