Item: A special request for the Holidays and out to zip code 31410 and a special youngster there - Wyatt.
Update 11/2/08 and now it is all together. Here is what came back from the art department and donnas-art. Viola!

Update 10.28.08 Done ? = not!. Hey we forgot the Wilson signature and the whirly wheel. So I have got to scoot out to the space and get on the scroll saw and make some dust. Here we go and visit Wilson, NC famous for the Whirlygig Festival coming up next month.
Update 10.26.08 and this marble roller is ready to send over to the art department for the finishing touch. Look in at donnas-art to see the progress. The Savannah roller - Ol' #24 was enjoyable to make and a few extra fun features included the top feed magazine and it's stopper which hangs down to the rail below and registers each passing marble and the side track on the discharge rail at the base. See you when donnas-art sends it back.

Update 10.23.08 After a event packed weekend and a busy week it's good to get back in the space and make some more sawdust. With the end in sight there is still time for a new feature at the top and at the bottom on the side board. I have to think of something fun for the top rail. Hhmmm. Let's experiment and play with what we got for a bit and why not. It's always fun to check form fit and function.
Update 10.14.08 and let's make a trip to the space tonight to fit another rail and reach the top. Things are busy busy around here and daughter #2 is coming into the RDU from NYC for the Hemophilia Walk on the week end so it is good to get something done today.
Update 10.12.08 to begin fitting the rails and build to the top. Lets get started on the rails and the first one is easy enough because the length of the rail is not defined at both ends. Still in all the post that will suspend the exit rail will be difinite as will be the notch.
Each time a rail is added the next corner is added and so is each level added like a building is set stone upon stone and story upon story and as such is a young life built Wyatt. On the back of a dollar build is a pyramid indicative of a persons life and built to the top each level upon the next level to a time when we can see clearly. So up we go and by using a level indicator can keep the incline at five degrees.
Update 10.9.08 With some more work on the band saw and sanding at the drum sander on the drill press and than a 1/4" bead put on the router table the corners are ready to go on the posts. A notch on the outside will fit the rails with an overlap and pin to place them. The first turn is in place.
Update 10.8.08 for some more work on the corners and a base coat of cobalt blue. Let's make some more sawdust and get off the router table and do some layout for the bandsaw work to get a finished shape on the corners.
There has to be a 5 degree drop on the rails as well as through the corners so a fixture on the drill press will help do the trick and a 3/4" forstner bit is what I use.
Lets go out to the space and get set up and get started.First thing is to get the base cut out and the skirting and sides cut out and glued and nailed and than the base is drilled for the uprights which are glued in place. With the sides in place a 1/4" bead can be cut on the router table to dress the corners of the base.
Next the corners are prepared and a center hole drilled for a swivel point on the router table. A 1/4" hex bolt with the threads cut off is used for the pivot point and the depth of the cove cut is achieved in three passes on the router table so the corner will put the marble through the turn..
